A memorable function begins with a memorable location and the Takahe is a very special venue.  This enchanting heritage stone building sets the perfect scene for a unique and memorable event. You’ll definitely be stimulating people’s imagination!  The Sign of the Takahe is now one of Christchurch’s most sought-after group and function event spaces, with its distinct castle hill top charm, the venue can now be transformed to hold your most iconic parties or intimate enough to give your guests a group gathering to remember. You have two dedicated spaces to choose from for your function.

Grand Lounge Bar, Armoury & Cigar Room & State Tea Room

This glorious lounge bar with space for a band or DJ has 3 unique adjoining rooms that flow. They have the most amazing castle like feel. Old stone walls, cozy fireplaces, grand tables and lounge bar setting.  Plenty of candles, suit of Armour, swords and shields. ability to have 120 seated plus 350+ if using garden with Marquee.


Below is a based upon a typical upstairs evening Function (non Wedding)  and their associated costs. If your function requires a morning, afternoon or daytime slot, please contact us for pricing.

 Please note that bank holidays and/or seasonal key dates may be subject to price variation/adjustment. These prices are based upon average of 40 to 80 guests. Basic layout, quick set up times and not including theminimum bar spend.

Downstairs Function Space

Known as the Dungeon Bar & Garden room. This cosy below ground bar leads out into the main garden area. It can cater for up-to 70 guests in cocktail style.

Enter via your own private entrance. This cosy below ground Bar was the original first part of the building and dates back to 1918 where the first stones were laid.  Steeped in history, it features rough stone walls and floors, wooden polished flooring and unique signatures dating back to 1920’s.  The bar then leads out into the main garden room which as a carpeted area with access and views to the garden. It can cater for up-to 70 guests in cocktail style.

    • Cocktail Style (max of 70)
    • Afternoon/Evening Reception only 5pm til midnight.
    • Available from 3pm setup
    • $300 hire
    • Also Min Bar spend of @ $1000 applies.

Licensed Bars

We are a fully licensed premises that have a great selection of wine, beer and spirits. With two separate bars (one upstairs and one downstairs)With two separate bars (one upstairs and one downstairs)

We can work with you to determine which beers and wines you would like to select, or just go with the flow with our house list. We have an extensive list (which does change depending on season, year and supply). Beers/cider and a great selection of spirits and cocktails await. Plus not forgetting low or non alcoholic options.

We can also work with you to provide: Welcome drinks,  Tasting notes, Self Service, Toast Bubbles, Pass the Port, Whisky Grand Pour plus other bar service options.

To note:

  • There is a realistic minimum bar (drinks) spend*.
  • No BYO (but we can arrange to source product – TBA).
  • Licensed hours based upon Restaurant usage.

* Minimum Drinks spend is an agreed amount of sales that are required to go through the bar on the night.  If the bar drinks total falls below that agreed set amount, the difference is required to be paid. **Our minimum spend is based upon 30-40 guests having 2 or 3 drinks.  Please note: Many City Function spaces require huge minimum bar spends and also then open to the public after a certain time. We offer this bar as exclusive use to you all night.

External Catering

We are a Venue and bar hire only, Our preferred caterers provide our customers with a wide range of catering options for functions. Weddings, Corporate, Birthday parties, Engagements, Christmas parties, Funeral catering and everything in between. Intimate picnics and large team events are no problem. They have a professional teams to help make your wedding or function run seamlessly.

So… If you are looking for a high quality, dependable caterers for your event, look no further than them. They know our building, are industry experts in providing menus full of culinary flair. They cater for all types of dietary requirements, including allergies, intolerances, religious restrictions as well as vegetarians and vegans. They have crafted what we believe to be exciting menu options that suit the Takahe building vibe.

Note:  We do have other caterer options, please speak to us, If you have a non-preferred Caterer that requires access to our kitchens to prepare, please again speak to us first.

Downstairs Takeaway Cafe open and does not require a booking.
